Your Dentist Isn't Lying to You About Flossing

April 5, 2022

Flossing may not be the most exciting topic to discuss with your Marco Island dental care provider, but it is important to know about the benefits of flossing and why it is necessary to clean between your teeth.

Flossing is a simple way of removing plaque and bacteria that lead to cavities and other dental issues. This article will discuss the importance of flossing and when and how to do it properly.

The Benefits of Flossing

Preventative Oral Care

Regular brushing won’t be enough to put a stop to plaque buildup. Even if your teeth are in good shape, you’ll still have to floss to prevent the onset of tooth decay and cavities. Moreover, regular flossing between each of your teeth ensures plaque removal and excellent oral health.

Prevents Bad Breath

Regular flossing will help remove food particles trapped between your teeth, which can cause bad breath. Not only that, but the bacteria in those particles often create a colony in front of your teeth.

Flossing will help remove this colony, preventing the bacteria from reforming and causing an awful and smelly breath. Additionally, flossing also helps eliminate bacteria that lead to gum disease and tooth decay.

When Should You Floss?

Although there is no hard rule on whether brushing should come first before flossing, most dental professionals suggest that you floss your teeth before brushing them. You soften the food particles and plaque buildup between your teeth when you floss. Brushing them after will wash them away easier, resulting in cleaner teeth and gums.

Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss them once a day to ensure that harmful bacteria cannot build up.
