Top Reasons Why We Lose Teeth

August 1, 2022

Dental implants like All-on-4® in Marco Island become necessary only when a person has lost one or more teeth. Implants comprise two restorative devices – a steel shaft that replaces the roots of lost teeth and the crown or artificial teeth on top.

There are various reasons why people may experience dental loss. Some of these causes are avoidable or reversible, while some come from factors beyond the patient’s control.

What Can Cause Teeth Loss?

Below are the three most prevalent conditions that could cause a tooth to fall out and require restorative dentistry.

Tooth Decay

Each tooth comprises a hard external shell called the enamel, a secondary layer called the dentin, and the pulp. The enamel is resilient to most damaging factors, including plaque. However, plaque is persistent since it encourages bacterial growth, which produces lactic acid that slowly damages the hard enamel.

Failure to regularly clean the mouth will allow bacteria to multiply and coat the teeth with acids. Over time, the acid will erode the enamel and create holes called cavities. These cavities will continue to grow until the infection reaches the pulp and kills the tooth’s root. At this point, the tooth dies and becomes brittle.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is but another complication of plaque. When bacteria reach the portion between the tooth and the gums, they cause inflammation and tenderness. This stage of gum disease is reversible through consistent oral hygiene.

Like tooth decay, an unattended plaque near the gums will irritate and cause the gums to open flaps of tissue. These flaps are vulnerable to bacterial infection. They also open a path for the microbes to infect the bone structure that bond with teeth. The tooth may become loose when the damage becomes severe.

Physical Trauma

A blunt object hitting the jaw or mouth with sufficient force can damage the bones holding teeth together. The teeth nearest to the point of impact could get cracked, chipped, or knocked out. In most cases, the tooth can still be saved by the dentist, provided the root remains moist until the patient reaches the dental clinic.
