Should I Buy a New Toothbrush After Being Sick?

June 27, 2022

Experts in family dentistry on Marco Island do not always recommend changing toothbrushes immediately after recovering from sickness. There’s no rule of thumb on this matter, but there are factors family dentists might want you to consider regarding this subject.

Factors That You Should Consider

You Have a Low Risk of Reinfection After Recovery

The immune system does not only eliminate foreign microorganisms. It also builds antibodies that act as ID tags for harmful foreign objects. The immune system can launch an immediate and more effective response when that same microorganism invades the body immediately after the previous infection. Hence, you are generally at low risk of reinfection, but that’s not always the case.

People with compromised immune systems have a weakened ability to fight off infections, so changing a toothbrush right after getting sick is crucial. The same is true for individuals being treated for cancer.

The Brush Must Be Replaced if It Is More Than 3 Months Old

Doctors and dentists agree that toothbrushes should be replaced after they have passed the three-month mark. The bristles’ tips could have frayed from repeatedly rubbing against the enamel for that long. The worn bristles could cause gum and tongue lesions or worsen any existing infections.

Proper Oral Hygiene Is Always King

Good dental health practices remain the most effective method of avoiding infections and diseases in the mouth. Here are a few tips to bear in mind if you want to prevent ailments contracted through your toothbrushes:

  • Rinse the toothbrush thoroughly with running water to remove debris and toothpaste.
  • Don’t use an airtight cover for your toothbrushes. It impedes air drying, leaving behind moisture that lets bacteria thrive.
  • Use a vertical toothbrush holder with features that separate one from the other.
  • Avoid sharing toothbrushes.
