How to Know If You Have Gum Disease

August 12, 2021

Do you have gum disease? When gum disease is caught early and treated with periodontics in Marco Island, the good news is that it can still be reversed. Unfortunately, when it’s discovered late, the treatments are going to be more aggressive and not to mention more expensive.

How can you tell if your gums are healthy or not? During your annual dental checkups, your dentist will be able to detect signs of gum inflammation and infection.

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Disease?

When you’re able to identify the early symptoms of gum disease, you should notify your periodontist so that you can be treated right away.

The disease starts with inflammation and the usual symptoms of inflammation include red, bleeding, swollen, and tender gums tissues. Your gums usually bleed when you brush and floss your teeth.

Bad breath is also indicative of gum disease. Another thing to look for is when your gums don’t look the way they used to. Shrinking gums can be a sign of gum disease.

How Do You Treat Gum Disease?

The goal of periodontics is to stop the infection from spreading. The first line of defense against gum infection is deep cleaning. This is different from the regular cleaning as it scrapes away plaque and tartar from under your gum line. The instruments used are also different.

You will also be given medications to control the inflammation. Examples of medications to treat gum disease include antibiotic gels, microspheres, enzyme suppressants, and oral antibiotics. For severe conditions, surgery may be needed.
