How Does Stress Affect Your Oral Health?

December 12, 2022

We all face stress at one time or another, and you're probably aware of what stress can do to our bodies. But stress is something that many people don't consider as a cause of some of their conditions when visiting a dentist in Marco Island, Florida. Unfortunately, our mouths are just as likely to be affected by stressful situations as our bodies and minds and you might end up requiring dental services.

The Causes and The Effects

Dry Mouth and Tooth Decay

One of the main reactions of our body to stress is a dry mouth. Saliva is the first defense against bacteria in the mouth. The less saliva secretion, the higher the risk of oral diseases. It also increases the acidity in our mouth and attacks the tooth enamel developing cavities and other infections.

Periodontitis

During periods of anxiety, it is common to neglect good nutrition, consume more sugars, smoke more, and forget about basic dental hygiene. Bacterial plaque takes advantage of these bad habits to lodge in our gums and can lead to periodontitis.

Cold and Canker Sores

Cold sores are caused by a virus that lives in the facial nerves and reproduces at times when the body has fewer defenses, such as during periods of stress. Canker sores are whitish sores that form on the gums and mucous membranes caused by viruses, bacteria and deficiencies of the immune system weakened by stress.

Stress-Induced Bruxism

It is an involuntary habit that consists of clenching and/or grinding the teeth during sleeping hours, or even while awake. Stress is the main cause of this pathology. If Bruxism isn’t treated can lead to more severe complications, like dental hypersensitivity, tooth wear, difficulty chewing, muscle pain in the jaw, among others.
