Why is Aftercare Important After a Tooth Extraction?

After an oral procedure, proper aftercare is vital as it helps promote clotting and protect

the extraction site during the healing process. Remember that it is common to experience some post operative discomfort and swelling and occasional bleeding after extractions, but your dentist at Marco Island will use techniques to keep these side effects as low as possible. If you want to know more extensive information, check recommendations from the Oral Health Foundation.

How Should You Care for Your Mouth After an Extraction?

Practicing certain oral care practices, even on the first day, will help you feel better and heal faster.  In Marco Island, our dentist can offer excellent options  to reach your oral health goals.

Things you should DO to keep your mouth healthy after an extraction.

  • Eat a diet of soft, healthy foods and snacks.
  • Drink plenty of liquids.
  • Brush your teeth gently.
  • Avoid touching the extraction area.
  • Take all medications as directed.
  • Keep the extraction site clean.
  • After 12 hours, you may be able to rinse your mouth gently.
  • Rinse twice daily with salt water (one teaspoon of salt in a glass of water should be plenty)
  • Check in with your dentist as suggested.

Below are some things you DON’T want to do while you are healing

  • Don't use any toothpaste. Rinsing toothpaste from your mouth may dislodge the blood clot.
  • Don't drink with a straw. Sucking on a straw may dislodge the blood clot.
  • Don't drink hot liquids. Hot liquids may increase swelling.
  • Limit your alcohol use. Excessive use of alcohol may slow healing.
  • Don't smoke. Smoking may break down the blood clot and cause a painful tooth socket.
